The end of the summer sees a number of projects completed or
nearing completion. Northridge Sparkle
and Council District 12 have coordinated a series of projects that include a
new design for the Parthenia median area, including the installation of a new
illuminated flag pole, which will be dedicated this fall. At the same time, the median will be landscaped
with drought tolerant plants, improving its appearance and saving water.
Don Larson, co-chair of Northridge Sparkle, is promoting the
flag dedication event as, “healing all Americans after the November vote”. The flag pole installation has been made
possible through the donation of services by various city agencies, including
the Bureau of Street Services, as well as a number of individual donations of
time and money. The drought tolerant
landscaping is the result of a grant from the Department of Water and Power.
Phase Three street repairs by the Bureau of Street
Services, recently completed along Reseda Blvd between Nordhoff and Plummer,
included the replacement of broken sidewalks and improvement of median
planters. BSS received funding this year to make selected infrastructure repairs
to each of the fifteen Great Streets, of which the Reseda Blvd Great Street has
benefited greatly. We thank them and the other city agencies involved for
their hard work
One more exciting project that is working its way slowly but
surely to completion is the placement of Northridge’s first “Horses of the
Valley” decorative horse in the community. The horse, funded by the Northridge South
Neighborhood Council and decorated by Museum of the San Fernando Valley’s
Public Art Initiative Artist Ingrid Elburg, is being prepared for installation
at its projected site, at the corner of Zelzah and Nordhoff, across from CSUN.
The horse, only the second to be purchased
and decorated for a neighborhood council, represents the equine tradition of
Northridge and the North Valley, where horse ranches and horse breeding
flourished just before and after World War Two.
Finally, Northridge will be host to the second annual CSUN
Day of Service on Saturday, September 10th. A coalition of service organizations
including Northridge Sparkle, CD 12, the Northridge Chamber of Commerce, plus a
number of CSUN student organizations, the day of service will include several
hundred CSUN students cleaning the streets and sidewalks adjacent to the
campus. Designed as an outreach to the
community, CSUN students will be working with neighborhood stakeholders and
leaders to beautify the neighborhood. Students and stakeholders participating in the
day of service will be meeting on campus, at the Bayramian Hall lawn, at 8:00
am, before setting out for their assigned cleanup locations.
